SAILING DAYS

JT's sailing experiences during the 50s and 60s later became the basis for many nautical paintings and collages. This picture shows the Chauve Souris (It means "bat" in French), an Alden running-backstay schooner on which JT learned to sail on the waters around Martha's Vineyard in the 1950s. This picture, taken around 1925, shows her gaff rigged but by the 1950s she had been re-rigged marconi style. The Chauve Souris was owned by photographer Hans Van Ness who often let his oldest sons Hans (Jr.) and Gordon, then aged 16 and 17, take the boat out even when he was not aboard. Hans and Gordon often included JT in their crew.
