HOW TO USE TALBOT ARTS IMAGE TRANSFER PAPER WITH COASTERS & TILES

Laura Cody, of www.lauracodyart.com, has generously supplied the following information. The process she describes which uses Talbot Arts Inkjet Image Transfer Paper will also work with Talbot Arts Original Image Transfer Paper if you use a laser printer or toner-based copier to create your images.

I am an artist and have had digital photo images of my art put on tiles and hardboard coasters for a number years. The cost to have them made has been increasing and I wanted to find a way to decrease my expenses and produce them myself.

I found 4 marble coaster kits on the clearance rack of a home goods store and decided to give it a try. The results were GREAT, so I decided I would buy the necessary supplies without having to purchase the entire kit. After a number of unsuccessful attempts, I started to search on line. I was thrilled when I came across Jonathan Talbot's website. I ordered his paper to try to figure out how to reproducer these coasters. After many attempts and some very helpful suggestions from Jonathan, I have finally mastered the technique to put color photo images on stone coasters and tiles using Jonathan’s ink jet transfer paper. I hope the following instructions will be helpful.

MAKING COASTERS AND TILES USING INKJET IMAGE TRANSFER PAPER

1. Create image on Image Transfer Paper, using inkjet printer with waterproof ink
2. Cover the face of the image with 2 coats of Mod Podge. Allow first coat to dry for about ½ hour before applying second coat. Allow the final coat to dry at least 45-60 minutes.
3. Cut the image to the size needed for the surface
4. Submerge the image face down in a shallow pan of water for 15-20 minutes.
5. Gently rub the corner of the image and start to peel away the top layer of paper starting at the corner.
6. Place the image back into the pan of water face down and with your fingers in the water gently rub along the back of the image until the rest of the paper is removed. (with a gentle touch you can feel the image get smooth as the paper is rubbed off)
7. Remove the image from the water. Place it on a flat surface face up and allow to dry completely (placing it face up on a terrycloth towel to dry works very well}.
8. Once dry coat the back side of the image and the top side of the stone coaster with Mod Podge. Fix the image on the stone and gently smooth out the any air bubbles by gently rubbing along the surface. Allow to dry until the surface feels hard. (This may take a few hours depending on the thickness of the Mod Podge).
9. Coat the surface and sides of the coaster with another layer of Mod Podge. Allow to dry completely. (I sometimes let it dry overnight)
10. Once completely dry, spray each coaster with at least 2 coats of SPAR URETHANE and allow to dry.

These coasters will work for hot or cold drinks.
